The Seattle Slew

Seattle Sports. Through thick and thin

Walter Thurmond III and the use of Social Media

Terrible news for all the elite teams this week. Chiefs go down, Broncos go down, and now we Seahawks have a Walter Thurmond drug suspension,

Walter Thurmond III got suspended 4 games over the weekend for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, non PED’s. That’s a fancy way of saying that he got caught with some weed in his system.

Now I’m not here to judge Walter…we don’t know the whole story, but I am disappointed that this had to happen. But I’ll defend WTIII cuz he is one of the boys. We as fans, should always have his back as long as he wears a Seahawks uniform, no matter what. It’s not like he killed someone…who hasn’t smoked a little weed here or there? Tea Party people…that’s who.

So now we have a slew of Seahawks fans blasting WT3 on Twitter, Facebook, message boards, etc….What did Jesus say about casting the first stone again? Oh yeah, not supposed to do it.

Here’s a sampling of one such post:

“Someone who does this will likely continue and did it to the detriment of his team – let him get overpaid by someone else and smoke up there. After what this team has done for him, he pulls this crap? Totally disgusted!”

This is the main problem I have. WT3 gets a pick six and everyone loves him. Then he does something off the field, and people turn on him like he stole the bow and arrow package from Katniss Everdeen.

I have a whole lot of things to say about this…social media in general, but let me just say that the problem here is that just because you CAN do something doesn’t mean you should.

Twitter doesn’t give you the right to be a jerk, it just gives you a platform to be one.

The analogy is this: If a friend of yours did someone wrong…would you go on the internet to tell the whole world how disappointed you are in them? You may not have meant to do any harm, but you are by going on social media to tell everyone about it.
Now to the issue at hand:  The fact is-Walter was a huge part of our defense and a big part of the LOB.
If the LOB was Wu-Tang, Walter Thurmond III would be Cappadonna…and for the hip hop people out there, Cappadonna was a pretty decent MC in his own right.

The Seahawks now have Richard Sherman, Byron Maxwell, Jeremy Lane and possibly Tharold Simon or a few other guys off the practice roster.

I don’t think it is doom and gloom. If there is one area where the Seahawks are especially deep, its the secondary positions. The problem is, it probably couldn’t have come at a worse time. The Saints are coming in the biggest matchup this season, and the Saints devour opposing teams defense. Especially through the air.

And let’s not forget, it was essentially this same unit last year, during the time the Seahawks really got hot. We didn’t have Browner or WT3.

So not to sound like the eternally optimistic fan boy, but I think the Seahawks will be okay. If we beat New Orleans, all we really have to do is win 2 of the next 4 games to lock up the #1 seed (because we would own the tiebreaker with NO). Lose to the Saints, and they own the tiebreaker, but we still have the easier schedule down the home stretch.

Either way, the worst case scenario (seeding wise) for the Seahawks is pretty much the #2 seed, which is not a bad way to live. Let’s just hope they can squeak by the Saints (which I think they will) and we can start thinking about playoffs in the Emerald city.
