Forget the hideous image that 49ers fans put together to make this billboard. You would think with all the creative minds in Silicon valley, someone would have known to use a program other than MS Paint to create this graphic.
How many rings? Such is the popular boast of many of 49er nation fans to Seattle Seahawks fans. In case you missed it, a group of 49ers fans have come together to raise money to buy a billboard in Seattle bragging about how many championships they’ve won, and reminding Seattle how many we have won. I don’t have much problem with the billboard…they are giving money to the Seattle economy, and donating the extra proceeds to the Seattle Children’s hospital, so good for them. It might anger some fans, but you can be sure that the Seahawks players will use it as bulletin board material should they face the 49ers in the playoffs. To be fair-Seahawks players will use anything to motivate themselves.
49ers do get some bragging rights for having multiple championships, but there are several problems with playing the “Ring card” every time there’s a heated discussion between 49ers and Seahawks fans.
1. Past rings have no relevancy to today. Correct me if I’m wrong, but none of the current 49ers players have ever won a Super Bowl. There’s only one guy, Anquan Boldin, who has, and he did it for another team…while beating the 49ers.
2. If you have to talk about past accomplishments, that means your current team doesn’t have much ground to stand on. Sure, they beat the Seahawks the last game….but everyone who watched the game came away with the same feeling: At Candlestick, it’s about 50/50 who wins that game. At CenturyLink? There’s no question who wins. Seahawks all day err day.
3. Lastly and most importantly, the 49ers haven’t won a Superbowl since 1994. 1994! I was a pimply faced sophomore in high school and weighed 120 pounds. (I no longer have pimples!)
Let’s go ahead and reminisce about some of the other things that happened in 1994:
-OJ Simpson, investigated for murder, fleed from police in his White Ford Bronco.
-Nancy Kerrigan was assaulted by some hit men, masterminded by Tonya Harding.
-Tom Hanks wins best actor award for Forrest Gump
-ER and Friends first debuted on NBC
-Kurt Cobain committed suicide. Nirvana ends.
Other things that have happened since their last championship:
-Tupac Shakur and Biggie died
-Pagers came and went
I think you get the idea by now. I love the trash talk from the 49ers, but the “number of rings” well is running a little dry. 49ers can only use that card for so long…especially when and if the Seahawks establish dominance in the NFC West, and perhaps win a Superbowl.
This is a world of “what have you done for me lately?” and Seahawks fans are living in the present, not the past.
